Awake in the darkness, a poem for The Quest
Awake in the darkness, a poem for The Quest. Gabrielle awakens from a
dream into a nightmare: Xena has died at the end of the episode,
Destiny. Personally, I always think of these two episodes as one piece,
Destiny and The Quest. I never think of one without the other, two of my
absolute favorite XWP episodes. And even though this is the only poem
directly associated with the ep, the influence of Destiny and The Quest
pervades my writing.
Awake in the darkness
Awake in the darkness,
this never-ending darkness,
daylight is darkness,
all light is darkness,
and I am alone.
We two became one,
now we are one again,
I am alone again, but not one,
for half of my soul is gone,
gone and will not be back again.
I thought we would be together,
I thought we were meant to be
together forever, always together.
How could you leave?
How can I go on,
when my reason for living
is gone?
I held you as you cried,
I held you as you died.
Now I wrap my arms 'round
this wood, the wood
of this box that surrounds you,
like the cold deadness
that surrounds my heart,
my cold and dead wooden heart,
like dead wood that soon will
decay and rot.
How could you leave me
when you’ve breathed me your breath?
Filled me with love, with life,
now you’ve given me your death?
You were all I could have hoped for,
all that I lived for,
all that I’ll never live for again.
Why didn’t I tell you
all the things I wanted to tell you?
Why didn’t I hold you
the way you needed to be held?
How can you leave me
to live in this Hell?
