Couldn't, a poem for SAC2 and Fan Fiction (The Look In Her Eyes)
Couldn't...from an early draft of "The Look in Her Eyes" inspired by SAC II. I wrote this one for the story The Look in Her Eyes, but it didn't make the final cut. It was originally meant for the moment right after Xena read the Bard's last scroll, you know, the letter Gabrielle wrote the night before that fateful day in the temple. (In my Xenaverse, anyway.)
Well, the poem below didn't make it in, but I couldn't bear to just throw it away. *G* I imagined Xena "pacing around and around," half mad with grief, and I couldn't get that image out of my mind. *G* So I wrote this for her. Oh, and here's how I would perform it, just so you'll know how it's s'posed to sound: I speak the lines reeeeal fast. Or sometimes slower and in my best "Boris Karloff does the Grinch" Dr. Seuss kinda voice. Trust me, the point is to have FUN with this stuff! bamaHAM wouldn't steer ya wrong. *G* (Good gods, this note is longer than the poem! *G*) bama :) (I've got an audio file of this, but it sounds so stupid, I'll have to re-record it. I hate to hear poetry read most of the time. And my own in my own voice is apparently no different...and this note just got longer, didn't it? *G*) bama :)
Couldn't
She couldn't stand up,
she couldn't sit down,
She couldn't stop her pacing
around and around.
She couldn't bear the memory
of the look in her eyes.
She couldn't bear the memory
of the sound of her cries.
She couldn't bear to think
of the fight she had lost.
She couldn't bear to think
of the life it had cost.
She couldn't bear to remember
the words she had read.
She couldn't bear to believe
that she really was dead.
She couldn't bear to remember,
though she'd remember it always.
She couldn't bear to remember
the goodbye in her gaze.
For when the bard stepped in
to defeat her daughter that way,
she took her love and her hope.
She took the warrior's heart and soul
with her that day.
